Requirements

The Vocal Department at Brooklyn High School of the Arts is dedicated to the highest performance standards in music. Students pursue a rigorous program of solo and ensemble singing. Students have the opportunity to work closely with top professional vocalists in the New York scene through our various partnerships. Since its inception, the department at BHSA has performed high-quality and challenging music.

Freshman Choir

The freshman choir is an environment where vocal students can thrive and develop as individuals and as a community. Students learn group vocal technique, music literacy, basic music theory, sight reading, solfegé, singing in harmony and basic keyboard skills.  A variety of genres are studied including classical, contemporary, spirituals, folk, and popular.  Throughout the year students will learn to sing in several different languages such as English, Latin, and Ghanaian.  The Freshman Choir performs at the Winter and Spring concerts.

 

Women’s Choir

The prerequisite for this course is the completion of Freshman Choir or by audition.  The course is open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior girls.  The Women’s Choir studies and performs NYSSMA level 4, 5, or 6 pieces. The repertoire is comprised of music in 3 and 4-part harmony in a variety of languages. The choir performs at the Winter and Spring concerts as well as outreach performances such as at the Kings Theater.  Members of the Women’s Choir are also eligible to perform in the Brooklyn College Opera Choir.

 

Select Choir

The prerequisite for this course is the completion of Freshman Choir or by audition.  The course is open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior girls.  The Select Choir studies and performs NYSSMA level 5 or 6 pieces and participates in the NYSSMA competition. The repertoire is comprised of music in 4 to 15-part harmony in a variety of languages and genres. The Select Choir performs almost every month at venues such as the Barclay center, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, Jan Hus, as well as community outreach. Members of the Select Choir are also eligible to perform in the Brooklyn College Opera Choir.

Students must arrive with a song of their choice prepared and ready to sing, without instrumental accompaniment

 

Students should select a song that fits their tone or range

 

Each song should be carefully selected in order to best showcase the student's abilities

 

It is preferred that students have sight-reading ability
